Folktale Week 2025

Day 1 – Night

When it comes to the creatures of the night, people tend to fixate on the horrors lurking in the dark. Whether it’s the glistening fangs of a Vampire peaking from the shadows or the distant howls of a Werewolf when a full moon rises. However, there are also marvellous creatures that only appear at night if you know where to look for them. For example, on some coasts near the equator, there are rumours of bioluminescent spectres that hide from the sun in lost debris and random bits of driftwood. Once the sun sets, they’re able to leave their nests and frolic as they please, exploring the world when it sleeps. The only thing they’ve got to worry about is being back in time for the sunrise, for the fear of being stuck in stone takes over.

Day 2 – Echo

It’s often a mystery when things have existed for so long that it just seems normal to have them around. For example, in a small coastal town, there is a landmark known as “The Warbling Cave” that, if you try to look up its history, has always been a part of the town. I mean, you get the odd nutjob here and there that says it used to be just a blank cliffside, but caves don’t just grow from nowhere. Anyways, they call it The Warbling Cave due to the weird echo you get when yelling into it, which creates a strange, distorted sound of what you said back to you rather than repeating it until silence appears again. A lot of scientists and explorers have gone in to determine the reason, but they’ve been down there a long time… Probably just one of those maze caves, and they got lost somewhere in the middle.

Day 3 – Rain

I know rain can be a pest a lot of the time, but for the Cloud Roamers, it is always a pain in the ass. I mean, every time they want to travel, they gotta pray for clear skies because any chance of weather could lead to disaster. Whether it’s wrestling the waves of raindrops as they pluck your vessel from the clouds and plummet you to Earth, or you’re stuck solid in a snowflake for a while until everything decides to melt. It’s a chaotic lifestyle, but I’m sure it’s worth it for the views up there.

Day 4 – Book

The most dangerous kinds of magical creatures are the lazy ones. It’s not the laziness that makes them dangerous, but the outcomes of it. For example, there is an infamous wizard who got tired of having the carry their spellbook around constantly, so they decided to conjure up some legs for it so it could simply follow them around instead. Well, that was notably a terrible idea cause as soon as this book gained the ability to leave, it did. Now the wizard roams the lands without the ability to use magic, in search of the runaway tome. Guess now they’ll think twice before taking any shortcuts.

Day 5 – Charm

There are dark tales that tend to creep out of the blackest corners of the woods. Warnings of a chime so strange yet so charming that all you want to do is track it down. Heed this warning, travellers, for this is the chime of The Tooth Fairy. A hag so vicious and cruel that nobody knows what she looks like or where exactly she resides. All we know is the oscillating clangs that can pull people into her teeth-pulling trap. So next time you’re in the woods and hear a melody you can’t quite put your finger on, run. Run as fast as your legs can take you, as far away from the song as you can.

Day 6 – Storm

Usually, storms are a natural force, something that can’t really be made but can be predicted. However, there is a way where they can go above and beyond, but that’s only when they’re mustered up by chaotic little beings. Thunder Fae are billowing plumes of smoke enveloped in so much electrical energy, they could fry a whole grid in a matter of seconds. These pesky buggers, if not handled correctly, love to just set off sparks and see how much trouble they can get into. Thankfully, there are some clever individuals who figured out how to catch them and hope to find a way to make their chaotic abilities work towards a greater cause.

Day 7 – Dawn

Alas, a new day has dawned. The sun has broken out across the horizon, and all the bioluminescent spectres are huddled away, safe from its glaring beams. That is, all but one… Sadly, these sprites love a sweet treat, and there is nothing that they love more than a Bon-Bon. They knew the risks and revelled in the thought that bringing this bounty home would make them heroes. Now, they serve as a reminder to the others to never go on dangerous missions alone. Always believe in the buddy system, as it will reap plenty of Bonbons.
