Process – Visual Communication

Written Investigation

When this project started, we were sent off into the world with a map and was told to just write about what we saw. This is what was described as Written Investigation and when that concept was introduced, I found myself soon enjoying what was to come due to my love of spies and people watching. However, when carrying out this investigation, I wanted to give myself a handicap or at least something that would help other senses such as my sight to be more improved. That is why when I went off into the world, I wore a pair of ear defenders to muffle the noise around me as well as allow my sight to perceive more while also making the sound of my inner monologue become more prominent in my head.

Surveillance Photography

After being sent out to investigate our selected areas through written methods, we were told to head back to those same areas and photograph areas of significance in regards to our writing. The task itself was an easy enough concept although it was a challenge to get a clear shot of pigeon without it flying away. If it wasn’t freezing cold i’m sure it would’ve been an easier challenge but the cold wasn’t much of a problem once I was inside the places I needed to go.

Graphic Design Workshop

During this project, we had the chance to attend a Graphic Design workshop which showed us the world of Graphic design as well as the applications and career pathways a graphic design course possesses. We were then tasked to create a fictional character out of characters and by characters i mean letters varying in fonts and sizes. Out of that exercise I created what I like to call “PuncBit” who is a Punk Rocker Rabbit made out of Punctuation. This art style of collage and character creation is definitely something I enjoyed most out of this experience and is an aspect I would most likely explore more in the future.

Introduction to Photoshop

As well as the Graphic Design workshop, we also got an introduction to Photoshop and the processes it has in regards to art created in the realm of Visual Communication. Now I will be honest here, I’m not the best at photoshop and I don’t see myself using the program in the future due to the fact there is other digital art + photo manipulation software I am much more comfortable with. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this introduction as it was a non-serious induction where we messed around with settings and enhancement of photographs to create absolute monstrosities in comparison to what normally comes out of Photoshop.

Newspaper Outcome

After all the investigation and gathering photographs, it was time to compile them all in a fun and inventive newspaper format. I decided to come up with a concept that would break the compound elements of a newspaper and create something that caught the eye and quite literally jumped out of the page. I began by replaces text boxes with text spirals and continued off of that by making the illustrations come to live by springing off of the paper, allowing the newspaper to feel like an alive piece of work. As the project came to an end, so did the carousel. Jumping from subject to subject has been a rush and educational experience but it was time to start my journey into a 3D specialism and see where the future takes me.
